Pretty solid review, Jim, with one exception -- you can't really blame Merril for including Fantasy. That was always part of her remit. I have to say I was pretty upset when Paul Kincaid complained about one of my books (titled The Year's Best Science Fiction AND FANTASY!) having a lot of fantasy stories.

I think your takes on the individual stories are mostly spot on (certainly your take on Clifton's story (his last, I think) is exactly right!)

Also, it's been pointed out to me that Merril's publishers had the right to choose the final TOC, sometimes rejecting stories she would have preferred. So the five you list at the end may well have been her preferences as well.
