Long-time readers of this 'blog know that I like to put up a link every Christmas to my favorite holiday-themed Web site in the whole world: the NORAD Santa Tracker.
This year, think a moment about the people who created that site. Their normal job is air defense. Three hundred and sixty-four days a year they watch for signs of attack: missiles crossing the Pole aimed at great cities, or (nowadays) airliners full of terrified innocents straying off-course toward national landmarks.
But one day a year, they can turn their efforts to making some child, in some distant place, feel wonder and delight. (Though someone always has to keep watching the skies. Someone always has to watch.)
