Even the Church admitted that the trials for withches was a big mistakes. After 2-300 years but they did it. And it's sad, as you said that there are parts of the world where this is still going.

It's important to note that witchcraft was a secular crime. The Church wasn't executing people, it was the civil authorities, dealing with people guilty of a capital offense just as they'd deal with thieves or murderers. Witchcraft was illegal in the United Kingdom as late as World War II: Churchill's government used the Witchcraft Act to prosecute a "spirit medium" who revealed sensitive information as part of her scam.
