Ken Burnside

The primary reason for a Disaster Excuse is so that you can have the freedom to ignore recent events without having readers go "But why aren't the protagonists American/Chinese/Russians..."

Sometimes it's nice to be able to "set a clean slate" and let your cultures grow from there. This also helps avoid the drudgery, tedium and creativity sucking exercise of making multiple timelines of events and keeping them straight.

And I say this, guilty as charged, of working out a clever Disaster Excuse for a game product line, just so I could mix up "where the Earther ships come from" from the standard USAian, Chinese and Russian templates.
